Bafana Bafana midfielder Elrio van Heerden has joined English Premiership club Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer from Belgian side Club Brugge.
According to a report on the Premiership club's website, Van Heerden has signed a two-year deal and is their first signing of the upcoming season. He will team up with fellow South African Benni McCarthy at the Lancashire club.
The move to England ends a two-year stay in Belgium where he scored two goals in 67 appearances. Van Heerden - a product of the University of PE youth structures - started his professional career in 2002 with FC Copenhagen of Denmark where he stayed until 2006 after 26 appearances and five goals. He then moved to Brugge where his career took off resulting in call ups to the national team.
Van Heerden is expected to be in the final 23-man Bafana squad for the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup to be announced on Thursday.
